Dorothy A. Chamer

Age 97. Born July 4, 1914 in Toledo,Ohio. Died February 17, 2012 Westland, Michigan. Dorothy's strength in her ability to move on with a kind and giving spirit will always be remembered. Beloved wife of the late Paul Leonard Chamer; dear mother of Barbara Kaye (Richard A.) Groen and the late Daniel Paul Chamer. Grandmother of Eric and Carl. Great Grandmother of Devin, Blake, Rachel and Payton. Daughter of the late Anna Kathryn Fischer and Walter John Brown. Predeceased by her sisters, Margaret E. (Marvin E.) Dawe, Virginia Mae Brown, Eleanor Brown and her brother Kenneth Walter Brown. Also predeceased by her close friends: Marie Kozlowski, Florence Lucas, Laurene Shedlock, Josephine (Blondie) Mathews, Elizabeth (Betty) Savage (her Maid-of-Honor), and Kathleen (Kate)Downey (her next-door neighbor in Detroit). Survived by nephews Jack (Kay) Probst, Charles (Barbara) Rerko, Wayne (Sandra) Stringham and nieces, Florence (the late Alfred) Wargnier, and Betty Ann (John) Morroni, along with many great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chamer, of German heritage, moved from Toledo, Ohio to Detroit, Michigan when she was a preschooler. In 1925, Mrs. Chamer survived scarlet fever and diptheria and was a patient at Herman-Keifer Hospital in Detroit for 28 days. In the 1940s, she lived in Jacksonville, Florida, employed as a department store clerk. She returned to Detroit and was employed at Burroughs Corporation.In 1946, she met her husband, Paul, in Detroit, marrying in 1948, at St. Cecilia Church in Detroit. She worked at Burroughs until the birth of her daughter, Barbara. After Paul's untimely death, in 1963, she returned to school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her son, Daniel Paul, died in 1967, due to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Mrs. Chamer retired from her nursing position at Martin Place Hospital West, Detroit, in 1976. She later worked as a private duty nurse, caring for the aged. She enjoyed travelling, including trips to Italy, England, Switzerland, the Canadian Rockies, and California. She bowled for several years and, in 1968, bowled a 279 game-the highest score by a woman in sanctioned play at Oxford Lanes in Dearborn. She enjoyed listening to Detroit Tigers' games up until last year. She was active in the Ladies' Altar Society and then, the 50-Up Club of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish of Detroit. She later became active in the Dearborn PLAV (Polish League of American Veterans) Post 75-Seniors & Retirees. She lived in St. Sarkis Armenian Senior Tower in Dearborn for 30 years. She always enjoyed the morning coffee group with fellow residents. She moved to Westland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in 2010. Visitation will be Monday, February 20th, 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Sajewski Funeral Home, 19111 W. Warren Ave., Detroit, MI 48228. On Tuesday, February 21st, visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, 5780 Evergreen Avenue; Detroit, MI 48228-3996 (northeast corner of Evergreen and Ford Road). Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m.. Dorothy will be buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 25800 West. 10 Mile Road, Southfield.
