Sarla Nandani

Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Sarla Nandani, of Canton, Michigan passed away on December 22, 2024. She was 82 years old and enjoyed a lifetime of good health and a strong mind. She was surrounded by her husband, son, daughters, daughter-in-law and son-in-law. Sarla is survived by her husband, Manhar, of 54 years, her son and daughters, and their spouses: Manish (Arpan), Sejal and Shruti (Will), and her nine adoring grandchildren: Keya, Ezekiel, Paniyota, Navya, Sava, Shaila, Simona, Sona and Raina. She is also survived by her brothers, Jawahar Raj and Hasmukh Raj, as well as her sister, Mira Sadrani. Her cherished brothers, Dhirajlal, Natwarlal and Prafulchandra, and her sisters, Champavati, Indumati and Jaya, preceded her in death. Sarla was born on September 20, 1942 in Mangalore, India to her loving parents, Vithalji Raj and Leelavati Raj. Brought up in Mumbai, she was raised in an extended family with lots of emotional ties and support. She received her M.B.B.S. from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal and in 1970, she married Manhar Nandani and they settled in Canton, Michigan. After having three children in 1973, 1974 and 1977, she started her residency and then her practice, Argyle Psychotherapy, in Livonia, MI, while also on staff at various other hospitals. Sarla loved her career and the impact that she had on her patients. After retiring in 1999, she traveled to various places with Manhar, often visiting her family in India, as well as going to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Thailand, Bali, Alaska, and Panama. From 2003 to 2013, she devoted herself to the arrival and care of her nine grandchildren. Sarla’s kids and grandkids were her life and she was very active in visiting and taking care of them. She treasured every minute that she had with them, showering each with affection and love. She was always there to provide support in every way. She was full of tips and words of wisdom, loved cooking for all of them, and always wanted to make their favorite dishes. Her grandchildren were a source of immense happiness, and she derived great joy in spending time with them and spoiling them every chance she could get. Sarla was an avid bridge player. To stay active, she started two bridge groups at the Canton Senior Center and ran these groups with encouragement and help from the other players. She immensely enjoyed this time. She also joined other local bridge groups so she could socialize and keep her mind sharp. Sarla loved to crochet and felt real pleasure and happiness in making blankets, scarves and hats for all of her kids, grandkids, and friends. Even through her illness she continued to crochet and make scarves, hats, purses and hot pads as gifts. She made hundreds of hats and donated them to children with cancer. Sarla led a very simple yet beautiful life. She enjoyed the small things and surrounded herself with her friends and family. Her last months and days were spent around all of her family, enjoying each other’s company, playing games together, laughing together, and eating meals together. Sarla was extremely generous and giving in all aspects of her life. She always put the needs of others before her own. She had an adventurous spirit and a very creative mind, and to her, nothing was impossible. She will be most remembered for her huge heart and the love she gave to all of her family and friends. She will be dearly missed.
