Ruth Ann Ettinger

Ruth Ann Ettinger, age 58 of Seattle, Washington, passed away on March 26, 2024. She was the beloved daughter of the late Paul and Elaine (Helen). She was a loving sister to Linda (Swain) and Dan Ettinger. Ruth was born on July 9, 1965, in Royal Oak, Michigan, to proud parents Paul and Elaine. She grew up in Redford, Michigan before spending her adolescent years in Plymouth, Michigan with her family. Ruth graduated from Plymouth Salem High School, where she excelled as a student, athlete and musician. She continued her studies at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. Ruth went on to pursue a specialty in science and received her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by postdoctoral research fellowships in Madison and Seattle, Washington. After discovering the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, she made Seattle her permanent residence. Ruth was passionate and committed to her work as a research scientist and had an interest in making discoveries that focused on eliminating / preventing diseases and improving health. During her career, areas of scientific research included ferritin/iron, vitamin D, type 1 diabetes and hemophilia A. She always had a desire to do her very best, being meticulous in the way she would go about her work, and conscientious in her pursuits. Ruth has been credited with numerous scientific publications and making important contributions to her field, which continues to be impactful in the lives of others. Ruth will be remembered for her tenacity, strength of spirit, resolve and fearlessness. She was incredibly humble, thoughtful, kind and a loyal friend. She had a love for movement and exercise which fueled her spirit. Swimming and running were constant anchors in her life. Ruth was ambitious and developed a passion for cycling and skiing, continually pushing the limits of her abilities. She was an athlete through and through and took great fulfillment from participating in competitions beyond her school years, rising to the level of triathlete. Throughout her life, Ruth was drawn to the outdoors and relished the quiet beauty found in nature, finding peace and solace walking by the ocean or biking in the mountains. Ruth’s quick passing leaves a void in our hearts. She fought a tremendous battle and never gave up, always showing determination and true courage in the face of adversity.
