Philip James Maloney MD

Phil passed away peacefully at the Angela Hospice Care Center surrounded by his family on December 8, 2016. He grew up in Detroit, son of Philip and Annie (Taylor) Maloney. Phil attended St. Mary's of Redford High School, University of Detroit and received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1957, specializing in Internal Medicine. He completed his internship in 1958 and residency in 1961 at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit. It was while working in the Emergency Room at Mt Carmel that he met the love of his life Mary Krug, who was a nurse. They were married in 1958 and together raised 5 children: Sharon (Tim) Casey, Tom (Judi), Paul (Beth), Dave (Shannon) and Ann (Ian) Youmans. Phil and Mary were proud grandparents of Sara, Michelle, Logan, Nicholas, Molly, Katie, Ryan and Kelsey. Phil is also survived by his sister Annette LaLonde. He is predeceased by his wife Mary, two infant children Patricia and Thomas P, and one brother John. From 1961-1963, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Community Medicine, University of Louisville Medical School. During this same time in Louisville Kentucky, as part of his Korean War military service, he was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Public Health Service, and worked for the Jefferson County Health Department as director of the county's venereal disease clinic. In 1963, he returned to Detroit to join Dr. Henry Smith in private practice in Internal Medicine and then continued in solo practice. Phil retired from private practice in 1991. Phil was a truly dedicated, caring physician, usually working seven days a week rounding daily in the hospital. His bedside manner was so kind and compassionate; he truly loved what he did. During his time in practice he cared for many priests and nuns in the following religious orders: - the discalced Carmelite nuns of Detroit (now in Clinton Twp) - the Passionists priests at St. Paul of the Cross Monastery - the Mariannhill Fathers in Dearborn - the Franciscan friars (Order of Friars Minor) of Duns Scotus Monastery in Southfield In 1991, he joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as a medical consultant for Policy Interpretation, Provider Services. In 1992 he was appointed Associate Medical Director of Provider Services and then Senior Associate Medical Director of Medical Affairs in 1995. He became Deputy Corporate Medical Director in 1998 and retired in 2001. Phil was dedicated to his family, who he loved more than anything. He enjoyed spending his ‘off work’ hours at home with his family, tending to his backyard- his pool, his rose garden and putzing around the yard. He also loved owning a vacation home up north and many a weekend were spent up north finishing his home and enjoying the beauty of northern Michigan. In later years he enjoyed traveling to Ormond Beach Florida with Mary, often receiving visits from his kids and grand kids to enjoy the time in the Florida sun. He will be deeply missed by his beloved family. They will work to carry on the family traditions he so loved and valued. Visitation Tuesday 2-9 PM at Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 46401 W.
