Alexander Francis Popp

Popp, Alexander, May 15, 2022, age 93 of Plymouth. Beloved husband of Barbara. Loving father of Stuart (the late Mary) Popp, Cynthia (fiancée Michael) Cooke & Eric (Jean) Popp. Proud Grandfather of Nicholas Popp, Matthew & Andrew Cooke & Olivia Popp. Born on May 5, 1929 to the late Alexander and Alice Popp. He was an only child and their pride & joy. Alex was a gifted pianist at a young age and played base drum in his high school marching band and graduated from Fordson High School in ‘47. He attended the University of Michigan Ann Arbor where he received both a Bachelor’s in ‘51 and Master’s degree in Music (Piano) in ’52, along with joining Sigma Nu Fraternity. After that Alex went into the Army during the Korean war and was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During that time he led Army Bands for those on their down time. Three years later he returned to Michigan and got a Master’s in Teaching from Eastern Michigan University. Alex started his 34 year teaching career at Dearborn Public Schools at Bryant Junior High in ‘57 as a Music teacher doing musicals in addition to teaching. Eventually he became a Social Studies teacher for the rest of his career. Besides teaching, Alex ran the school chess club and taught piano lessons on the side. In September of ‘59 Alex met Barb, which led to an engagement six weeks later and married on June 25th, 1960. Barb and Alex raised their three children, took yearly vacations, and then fortunately was able to travel around the world after retirement. Throughout Alex’s adult life he followed the University of Michigan sports religiously being such a devoted fan and proud that his three children also graduated from there. Alex was very proud of his four grandchildren, going to all their school activities, especially the band concerts. They followed in his footsteps by either learning an instrument or voice. Visitation Sunday, June 19th 3:30 – 8 PM with a 6:30 PM Rosary at Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 46401 Ann Arbor Rd. W. (between Sheldon & Beck) Plymouth. In state Monday, June 20th 10 AM until the 11 AM Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 47650 North Territorial Rd., Plymouth.
